Soooo….I’m a bit behind here but I have never really had the urge to head into Ony’s Lair.  The guild put together a group to run tonight.  After three wipes we finally got her.  Nothing good as far as loot but it was definitely a learning experience.  And seeing 8k DPS on the charts doesn’t hurt my confidence either (Thanks to phase 2 for that).

For a Rogue there’s not much to this fight.  PHASE 1 – Tank and spank but stay on the side of Ony to avoid tail and talon swipe.  at 60% health you begin PHASE 2 – First Fan of Knives the group of whelps that come out.  Redirect aggro using Tricks of the Trade.  Also your are watching for “Deep Breath” and you must immediately move to a wall in her lair.  After first phase of whelps switch to Guardian Adds (move out of range of guardians during blast nova) until 40% health and then begins PHASE 3 – Another tank and spank with some fears thrown in.  It’s really nothing when everyone pays attention and does their job.

It was short and fun and now that I’ve got an idea of how the fight goes I’m not as worried about Puggin it for 25man.

Ooo! Piece of Candy…Mutilate Deeps Revisited

So I hadn’t posted about this since I picked it up but I got my Black Night’s Rondel a couple of weeks ago but I hadn’t bothered heading for the tacklin dummies to test out my Deeps.  Well I did a few nights ago and was mighty surprised at what I found.  I was hitting 4k and able to sustain it unbuffed!  This is all compared to the boost Mutilate got after the 3.2.2 patch.  Check the link to read my story before…

I’m still interested to hear what some of my fellow mutilate Rogue’s are doing as far as Unbuffed Sustainable DPS?  A noobs gotta compare himself with someone!

3.2.2 Mutilate Boost

Did a normal rotation last night after the release and noticed about a 500 point increase in sustained DPS (about 3500) with peaks around 3700.  This was unbuffed and is compared to the 3K I was getting before the patch, with peaks around 3200.  I’m not a number Cruncher so I’m not going to try to explain it but here’s some of the changes that hit Mutilate Rogues yesterday;

  • Envenom’s scaling has been increased from 7% to 9% of attack power per combo point.
  • Fan of Knives: The damage done by this ability has been reduced by 30%.
  • Master Poisoner: No longer increases the Deadly Poison application rate following a successful Envenom and instead now provides a 33/66/100% chance of preventing Envenom from consuming Deadly Poison.

My PvE Rotation consists of; stealth Garrote, Hunger for Blood, SnD, Mutilate, Rupture, Spam Mutilate until SnD is about to drop, Envenom

The whole idea is simple, keep rupture on as much as possible.  Never let Slice and Dice fall off.  When Vanish is available throw another Garrote on your target once your into your rotation.

“Might” please!

Off topic and no tips here…

I realized soon after beginning playing a Rogue of it’s simplicity.  I realized that the only reason a group uses me is for my ability to produce quick spurts of High DPS.  But after many a night playing a heroic or trying to raid I realized that people probably had little or no respect for the class of Rogue as a whole.  I was tired of asking for “Might Please” and that was it.  We need things from other players such as buffs but we never give anything.  It took me a while to realize the way to give back was with a couple of my professions, Engineering and Cooking.  It gives me great pleasure during a heroic or raid to be able to do a couple things for the group;

First Engineering provides me with the ability to drop the Scrapbot Construction kit or the recently obtained and constructed Jeeves Bot.  It’s great for the entire group allows repairs and people to sell trash (Also sells certain reagents used by different classes).  It also has great benefits for someone high in the Guild who can keep flasks, water and Healing Pots in their bank to be able to offer them to the group instead of having someone head back to Town in the middle of a raid.

Second is pretty simple and is something any player can do and that’s the fish feast.  Every player in the group will benefit from this and it’s easy to throw down for everyone.

These are simple things but for a Class that takes, takes, takes.  It can go along way in progressing you in your guild and gaining respect from your guildies.  Make them consider you a necessity whether your skills are great or not…

All Nightmare Long

I wanted to do this entry because of the trouble Halls of Stone has given me as a Melee DPSer.  Out of the two times I have been to this horror I swear I had to have died 7 to 8 times.

In my most recent attempt with a very Veteran Group I managed to get by only needing a rez three times. *Ugh*  Group make up was a Pally Tank, Preist, Lock, Hunter and then me the loan Melee DPSer.  The Tank, Healer and Lock of the group are all Veteran players and also happen to be officers in the guild so they are well versed for this fight.  Here’s some tips for you so you don’t walk out of HoS with a little less “in-game” self-esteem.

Maiden of Grief
The Maiden will summon void zones under random group members that, generally, need to be moved out of.  She will also cast Shock of Sorrow, which does a small amount of shadow damage and incapacitates the whole group for six seconds.  The healer and tank, when they see her casting this spell, need to move into one of the void zones before they’re incapacitated, so the incapacitation will break and they’re able to continue tanking and healing while everyone else is stunned.  It’s important to note that if one player breaks the incapacitate and the tank doesn’t, the Maiden will immediately start attacking the non-stunned player, so the tank needs to be sure to break the effect.  As long as you’re able to survive the incapacitation’s one way or another there’s no real problem.  My problem came from the tank being incapacitated and me breaking it.  Sure enough she came straight for me.  Don’t let this happen to you!

Death 1 Rez 1 Wipe 0

Krystallus
Krystallus’ main abilities are a Stomp, which does a small amount of damage and ranged knockback that causes all group members to slowly turn to stone over 5 seconds and Shattering them once everyone is completely immobile.  The Shatter deals damage to any allies nearby, everyone spread out and tank and spank.  No death here.

Death 1 Rez 1  Wipe – 0

The Tribunal of Ages
After you talk to Brann Bronzebeard and escort him down the hallway to the Tribunal.  He will start to work on a computer terminal as the large heads on the wall start to come to life, and one begins shooting weak holy bolts at random group members.  At this point wave after wave of elite mobs as you’ve been fighting the whole instance will start running through the door you came from, and your job is to take them all down and prevent them from attacking Brann Bronzebeard in the back of the room.  After a while, the second head will begin attacking in tandem with the first; it slowly builds and fires a large orb that will deal heavy damage when it hits the ground, but can be easily spotted and avoided.  The third activates last, and will shoot continuous eye beams along the ground that need to be dodged.  Complete total wipe by the group at this point.  Healer got caught in a beam and we were not far behind.  Awhile after all three heads have been harassing you as you deal with the constantly incoming mobs, Brannwill succeed in shutting down the defensive system and a long scripted event will begin.  After it’s over, the door to the final boss will be open.  Although we wiped it, evidently we lasted just long enough to let Brann complete his task.

Death – 2  Rez – 2  Wipe – 1

Sjonnir The Ironshaper
This boss is  horific for Melee. He sends out a Static Charge, which tank and Melee both should flee from the boss, the charge will cause the afflicted to damage all nearby allies, in response to which he should back off from the group; and Chain Lightning, a nuke that chains to other nearby allies.  There will also be a wave of weak slime adds, followed by a wave of helpful Earthen if the fight lasts that long.  The difficulty is really based upon how much melee you have, as they’ll be taking far more damage than any ranged DPS, but as long as the healer keeps up it’s a fairly simple fight.  As a Rogue, stay on boss as much as possible and don’t worry with adds.  It was pretty disheartening to watch the Range from a distance just pound damage on this guy while I was busy running in a running out constantly.  It was to no avail.

Death – 3 Rez – 3 Wipe – 1.

I did manage to finish this place for the first time and got my achievement and a couple triumph badges.  But if Blizzard decides never to make this the daily again I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it…
